An informal title given by history to Richard III is ‘Lord of the North’ since from the early 1470s he was given governorship across the region and the Presidency of the Council of the North. Upon marriage with Anne Neville, Richard came into ownership of an array of castles, manors and holdings principally within the present-day counties of Cumbria, County Durham and North Yorkshire. One of the NDRIIIG’s aims is to promote Richard III’s association with this locality and to help connect people with the medieval era, its personalities, events and places.
